The Hermit's Peak/Calf Canyon fire may be history now, but those claims offices staying closed through Labor Day are a reminder this place is still in recovery mode. That 2022 burn scar stretched across 341,000 acres, and the bureaucracy of putting people whole again moves a lot slower than the flames did. Around here we've learned that lesson twice over, with Cerro Grande and Las Conchas both etched into the collective memory. The work of getting folks reimbursed and relocated never really makes the news the way the fire itself does, but it's the thing that determines whether your neighbors stay or leave the Pajarito Plateau when the rebuild gets expensive and the waiting gets long.
