Copper Flat's been a ghost story around here long enough that when someone finally gets serious about pulling ore out of that ground again, you get standing room only at the county hearing. Hard to blame folks for showing up, either. This country needs jobs the way the Rio Grande needs water, and a working mine means paychecks for people who've been watching young folks pack up and move to Albuquerque for a decade. But mining in Sierra County isn't simple economics, it's tied to water rights, to dust, to what gets left behind when the operation closes down in fifteen or twenty years. The real story isn't whether Copper Flat happens or doesn't. It's whether we've learned anything from the last hundred years of dig-it-up-and-move-on in these mountains. Meanwhile, the Tigers took their lumps in football but the volleyball team's doing what this town does best: showing up ready to work. That matters too.
