Nancy Carol Coates made it to 84, which around here means she saw the valley change from something you could cross on horseback to what it is now. The Bulletin's notice doesn't say much, the way these things go, but any of us who've lived in Las Cruces long enough know that the people who stay put through decades of growth are the ones who hold the place together. Whether she was raising kids during the boom years, or just keeping her corner of Doña Ana County steady while the sprawl came in, that matters. You notice it most when they're gone.
