Thomas Ocie Williams, who worked construction around the Mesilla Valley for decades, passed this week at 89. The obituary doesn't say much more than that, which is how these things usually go in a weekly paper, but any contractor or laborer who spent time here knows the type. Williams was the kind of man who showed up, did the work, didn't complain about the heat or the dust or the way this town has been tearing itself apart and rebuilding itself for the last forty years. Those hands that built things are what hold a place together, even when nobody's really keeping score. We'll remember him.
