Nancy Carol Coates made it to 84, which around here means she saw this valley change more than most. She was around when the chile industry was still finding its footing, when water meant everything and still does, when Hatch was smaller and quieter than it is now. The obituaries don't always tell you what a person meant to a place, but they're the honest record of who stayed and built something. We're smaller tonight than we were yesterday.
