Bernie Carrillo made it to 92, which in farming country means you saw the valley change from irrigation ditches to pivot sprinklers, watched chile prices swing wild, and knew most everybody who came through. The Hatch Valley loses someone like that, you feel it in the quiet mornings before the harvest trucks roll. But there's a rhythm to these things, and right alongside the obituaries in this week's paper sits a story about a young woman building something for her mom with a business of her own, and another about an entrepreneur with Threaded Joy finding her way. That's how it works out here. The older generation plants the seeds and passes the knowledge, and the young ones figure out new ways to make it work. Bernie's 92 years of watching and doing didn't disappear just because his name's in the death notices now. It's in the people who learned from him.
