Carol Ann Knapp Foreman and Clarence Villemez are gone, and that means two more threads cut from the fabric of the Mesilla Valley. You don't need to have known them personally to know what their passing means in a place like this, where families are woven into the land the same way irrigation ditches run through it. The smaller the town, the larger the absence. Both names will show up in the memories of people who bought chile at a stand, or sat next to them at church, or crossed paths at the market in Las Cruces. That's how it works out here. The work of living in a place like Hatch is remembering who came before us.
