What matters is that someone lived a long life around here, which means he knew water years and drought years, knew which neighbors pulled through and which ones didn't, watched the chile business transform from backyard enterprise to something that trucks south every harvest season like clockwork. When the older generation goes, they take with them the things you can't write down in a paragraph anyway. The rest of us keep farming the same ground.
