Ty's Take
There's something about watching a town decide it needs metal detectors at the middle school and high school that settles in your chest different than reading it in a report. OPENGATE screening at our secondary campuses—that's what we're calling it now, which is fine, names don't change what's happening. You can talk about safety protocols and threat assessment all you want, and sure, maybe we need them, but this is the moment when Deming admits out loud that keeping our kids safe means treating school like an airport. Meanwhile, down the street, they're tearing down the Balboa Motel to put in vendor space, which is progress of a sort, the kind that erases what was there before and hopes something better takes root. Two different futures for the same town, both of them saying something about where we are right now.

Deming Schools to Begin OPENGATE Weapons Screening at Secondary Campuses
Deming Public Schools is rolling out OPENGATE weapons detection systems at its secondary campuses this week to strengthen campus safety. The automated screening technology will check students, staff, and visitors for weapons and prohibited items as part of the district's enhanced security measures.
Balboa Motel Buildings Set for Demolition, Vendor Space Planned
The long-shuttered Balboa Motel on West Pine Street will be demolished to make way for a new vendor marketplace. The site, a relic of Deming's heyday as a highway destination, is being reimagined for community use rather than remaining vacant.
