The governor's drought declaration this week hits different when you're standing in Luna County watching the sky the color of old concrete and the fire danger map painted red from here to the Sacramento peaks. We've been through dry spells before, but there's something about an official statewide call that makes you realize this isn't just a bad year—it's the new normal we're adapting to. The irony isn't lost on anybody who knows this town: we're planning family barbecues while the state's basically telling us we're one lightning strike away from trouble, and our water table keeps dropping like a tank with a slow leak. That's the thing about living on the border of a desert—you learn to celebrate what you've got while keeping one eye on what could go wrong.
