Metal detectors at the junior high and high school—that's the kind of sentence that would've landed like a joke twenty years ago, but here we are, and Deming Schools is moving forward with OPENGATE screening at the secondary campuses. It's a practical response to what everyone's thinking about anyway, the thing that keeps principals up at night, and maybe it gives parents one less thing to worry about when their kids walk through those doors. Meanwhile, down on the other end of town, the old Balboa Motel is coming down, and in its place they're planning vendor space—the kind of small redevelopment that shows somebody still believes in filling the empty spots.
