The governor's drought declaration came down the wire today, and if you've been outside in Luna County the last few weeks you already knew it. The heat's been sitting on us like a blanket, the monsoon's running late, and anybody with a well or a field knows we're operating on fumes. There's a difference between official and real, though, and the difference is that now the state's saying it out loud—water's the constraint, not the comfort item. Meanwhile folks are firing up their grills for family gatherings this weekend, which isn't a contradiction so much as it's just how things work out here. We know what we've got, we know it's tight, and we gather anyway.
