The rain that hammered Arrey this week is exactly the kind of problem we used to pray for around here, and now it shows up and tears things apart. That's not a complaint, not really, because we need every drop the sky gives us, but it's a reminder that water in Sierra County is never simple. While Arrey deals with the cleanup, the Copper Flat mine question keeps circling back to the same hard truth: New Mexico's water future is tighter than it's ever been, and every new claim on it gets harder to justify. Between the drought and the dam levels that keep us all watching the Rio Grande like hawks, we're learning that having water and managing water are two completely different problems. At least this week we got one of them for a few hours.
