Norm Gaume's piece on Copper Flat hits at something we can't keep dancing around: the mine wants 36,000 acre-feet of water a year in a state that doesn't have it to give. That's not some abstract policy fight happening in Santa Fe. It's about what flows down the Rio Grande to Elephant Butte, what stays in those irrigation ditches downstream, and whether we're serious when we say water is the thing that keeps this valley alive. The mining company's not wrong that they could bring jobs and tax revenue. But you can't mine copper with promises. You need water. And water, around here, is the one thing we have to ration like it's gold.
