Two days of heavy rain coming through Friday has the National Weather Service keeping a close eye on our arroyos and low-water crossings, and the timing couldn't be tighter with that prescribed burn they're planning to start tomorrow up near Pinos Altos on NM 15. Burn crews know what they're doing, but fire followed by flood is a one-two punch that can tear up a hillside worse than either one alone. Meanwhile, the police department's got its hands full with a shooting and a stabbing both working through the investigation stage, which is just the kind of week that reminds you Silver City's still a real town with real problems underneath all the galleries and the hiking trails. Weather like this, tempers run short, and the forest service and county folks will be watching those burn scars close.
