Elephant Butte keeps dropping, and now somebody's trying to pull water out of the air at Spaceport America while we're under a conservation alert down here in town. You'd think that'd be backwards, but this is the kind of bind we're in: we've got the space industry wanting to build something that needs water, we've got the lake shrinking, and we've got engineers convinced they can extract moisture from desert air like it grows on trees. Maybe they can. Maybe they can't. Either way, the math doesn't change. This county's water math never changes. It just gets meaner every year.
