Ty's Take

Water's been the conversation around here since before Truth or Consequences was even Truth or Consequences, and this spring it's the only conversation that matters. Elephant Butte's level dictates whether ranchers downstream get their irrigation, whether the lake stays a draw for tourists and fishermen, whether the whole ecosystem holds together or starts coming apart. The state's been through this before, but the uncertainty never gets easier to live with, especially when you're watching the Rio Grande and trying to figure out what's coming down from upstream. Meanwhile, the city's moving forward with budget work and the Open's purse keeps climbing, which is good news for those betting on growth around here. But you can approve all the measures and prize money you want, and it won't matter much if the water stops flowing.
