Ty's Take

The Supreme Court's Texas v. New Mexico decision landed this week the way desert heat does—all at once and changing everything downstream—and while the lawyers sort out what it means for the Rio Grande, Truth or Consequences has a more immediate problem sitting right in front of the city council. We run on utility fees in a town that's never been rich, chasing tourism dollars and now space-industry hopes while the river that made us possible gets litigated by lawyers a thousand miles away. That's not a complaint—it's just the reality of being a New Mexico river town in 2024. The good news is people still care enough to show up to those city boards, still work the chairs and counters and steering wheels that keep a small place breathing. But the city council needs to find money that doesn't depend on how much water Texas decides we deserve.

Supreme Court decides Texas v. NM

The U.S. Supreme Court approved a settlement resolving a decades-long water dispute between Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado over Rio Grande rights dating back to a 1938 compact. The agreement hinges on historical water flow data from 1951 to 1978 to determine how much water must cross state lines.
