Ty's Take
Water's been the conversation around here since before this town changed its name, and it'll be the conversation long after we're gone—but May's usually when the real reckoning starts. Elephant Butte's levels aren't secret anymore, not with the Rio Grande Compact breathing down our neck and every farmer downriver watching the gauge like it's their bank account, which it is. The state's been tiptoeing around "overconsumption" for a while now, but calling it by name in print means somebody finally decided the dancing was over. Meanwhile the county's handling the nuts and bolts—dispatch contracts, EMS upgrades—and that's all necessary work that keeps things running. But you can upgrade your infrastructure all you want; what you really can't upgrade is water falling from the sky, and the sky's been stingy for years. Good to see the Hot Spring FFA kids doing their thing at state, at least. That kind of work—real agricultural knowledge, real kids who might actually farm or ranch here—that's worth celebrating when everything else feels like it's running on fumes.
