The water cupboard keeps getting emptier, and nobody's really talking about what happens when the tourists show up to soak in the hot springs while the farmers downstream can't fill their ditches. Elephant Butte's been dropping for years—everybody knows it—but we keep building on the assumption the Rio Grande will keep giving. Scholarship Night's a fine thing, community coming together for the kids, and Lord knows we need that. But you can give a kid every scholarship in Sierra County and it won't matter much if there's no water left to grow on or drink when they come back home.
