Ty's Take

Montana's going to let people register and vote the same day come November, which is the kind of thing that sounds simple until you're actually running a polling place and trying to verify someone's residency while the line's backing up to the door. The Supreme Court's ruling on the Voting Rights Act this week didn't help matters—stripped out some of the tools that used to catch problems before they happened. What that means for a county like ours is more work on the front end for our election folks, who are already stretched thin, and maybe more questions on the back end about whether everything ran clean. It's the kind of thing that matters most to people who've never had to work an election day, and least noticed by those who have.
