A slow news day around here is usually when you know things are working. The food pantry network is doing the hard labor that doesn't make headlines until somebody goes hungry, the geothermal greenhouse people are still finding ways to use what comes up out of the ground beneath our feet, and Chimney Rock is opening back up for the folks who drive hours to stand where the ancestors stood. Then there's the Mountain Chile Cha Cha hitting twenty years, which in a town this size means somebody had a good idea and neighbors kept showing up. That's not small. That's the actual economy of a place like this, the one that doesn't depend on second-home prices or ski reports. It's community, one breakfast and one pantry visit and one public gathering at a time.
