Ty's Take

Highway 160 tearing up downtown this week means you'll either find an alternate route or you'll sit in it—and honestly, either way it's probably worth the aggravation if it gets us a road that won't need this kind of work again for a few years. What caught my eye though wasn't the traffic advisory but the cluster of stories underneath it: the medical center wrestling with budget constraints, PAWSD still in drought stage one, housing so tight that people who work here can't afford to stay here. These aren't separate problems. A town doesn't hold together when the nurse or the teacher can't find a place to rent, when the water table keeps dropping, when the hospital's trying to do right by people with one hand tied behind its back. We've got natural gifts here that plenty of places would trade for—the hot springs, the forest, the ski area—but gifts don't run a community. The people who keep things running do, and right now we're making it harder and harder for them to stick around.
