Ty's Take

Memorial Day's coming up, which means we'll see the flags go in at the cemetery and hear the names read—the ones who didn't come home, the ones who did but left pieces of themselves somewhere else. That's always been the hard holiday around here, the one where you can't just barbecue and move on. But while we're remembering those debts, worth noting that the school district's landing a BEST grant for facility improvements and the Teen Dialogue Accelerator's recruiting kids who want to actually talk to each other across the lines we've drawn. Both matter more than they sound. Building infrastructure and teaching young people how to listen aren't monuments, but they're the work that makes a place worth defending in the first place—the part that comes after the ceremonies end and everybody goes home.
