Ty's Take

The regionalization story keeps coming back because it has to, but anybody who's watched county government work knows why it dies every time: nobody wants to give up local control, and nobody trusts the other guy's books. Solid waste and wastewater systems aren't sexy, but they're the backbone of whether a place holds together or falls apart, and that's exactly why people fight tooth and nail over them. Meanwhile, the schools just hired a safety director, the wastewater still needs fixing, and Elephant Butte Irrigation District is out there wrestling with growth questions that don't have easy answers. This county keeps bumping up against the same hard truth: we need each other's help, but we'd rather figure it out alone.
