The Cannonball Run wrapped up another wild weekend out on these waters, and seventy grand in cash and prizes changing hands is the kind of Labor Day send-off that keeps boat ramps busy and local businesses counting the till into the evening. High-speed boats, summer crowds still holding on tight to September weather, and enough adrenaline to make you forget the calendar's already turned. Meanwhile, Route A's closing for pavement work next week, so anybody heading down to the lake for one last push of decent weather better plan the drive now. This is the season where the lake does both things at once: it's still throwing parties and kicking up spray, but it's also telling us summer's on its way out.
