The National Weather Service folks don't use the word drought lightly, and when they're saying it about Texas County right now, that's worth paying attention. We've had dry stretches before, plenty of them, but what makes this one stick in your mind is the timing. Cattle operations are already calculating hay reserves they're going to need come winter, and if this thing holds through fall we're looking at decisions nobody wants to make about herd sizes. The Big Piney will bounce back like it always does, but between now and the first real rain, every rancher from here to the county line is watching the sky a little harder and watering a little more careful.
