Primary day came and went quiet, the way these things do when most folks are out working or staying cool before the heat picks up. The unofficial numbers are in for Conejos County, and what strikes you is how few surprises landed, which maybe says something about how well people know their neighbors' minds in a county this size. Come November the real race starts, but for now the valley's made its preliminary choices and moved on to whatever comes next. That's small-town politics, county-style: the ballots get counted, the winners get their moment, and everybody goes back to worrying about water rights and hay prices, which is probably how it should be.
