When a U.S. Senator shows up in farm country, folks tend to keep their expectations measured, but Hickenlooper walking into conversations with actual growers instead of just making speeches says something about how tight things have gotten out here. Water fights never really end in the valley, and neither do the margins on what you can grow at nine thousand feet, so a senator willing to listen to what's breaking people's operations matters more than whatever comes out of it in Washington. Meanwhile, the rest of us are doing what we always do: the Pioneer Days rodeo in Manassa will bring people together, the Forest Service is still figuring out how to let folks use public land without tearing it up, and down at the bank someone's stepping into new responsibility knowing every name and every problem that walks through the door. That's the pace out here. The big conversations happen between the small ones.
