Ty's Take

There's something about late spring in Otero County when the all-star rosters come out and the fishing reports turn serious—it's the moment when kids and their parents both remember why they stick around a place like this. Four or five of our young ballplayers made the cut this year, which means somebody's mother is driving north to Roswell or Las Cruces for a tournament while somebody's father's already got his cooler packed for the Tularosa Basin or up in the Sacramento foothills where the trout are running. It's the small-town rhythm that gets lost when you're spending all your time thinking about base closures and water rights and whether the next generation stays. Today's paper reminds us they're still here, still competing, still casting lines into good water.
