Ty's Take
There's a quiet story buried in this week's smaller notices—the kind that doesn't make anybody's evening news but says something true about a town. Thayer's trap-neuter-return program for strays is working, which means somebody sat down and figured out that you don't fix a problem by running from it. Same reasoning that keeps the Forest Service explaining the Secure Rural Schools Act to county commissioners, keeps nurses getting recognized at Ozarks Medical Center, and keeps our city council scheduling the hard infrastructure work on Girdley Street that nobody wants to pay for but everybody needs. The crash involving that West Plains teen is a reminder that young people still have to learn what older folks know by heart—this country doesn't forgive carelessness. Meanwhile, the Big Ten is moving money around in billions while Howell County's schools depend on timber sales and federal programs most people forgot existed. It's the distance between two different economies, and we're still the ones trying to make the smaller one work.
