Ty's Take

The Copper Flat Mine is back in the news, and this time it's got the hospital on its side. That's worth paying attention to. A mining operation in Sierra County isn't just about ore and economics, it's about whether we've got the jobs to keep younger people here and the tax base to keep our schools and clinics running. When our hospital board signals support, they're reading the same ledger we all are: population's flat, the space industry is still a slow build, and water's always the wild card anyway. There's a hearing coming on this, which means there's still time to ask hard questions about tailings, about the Rio Grande, about what "support" actually means when you're this close to Elephant Butte. The Sassy Red Hatters are out in pink for October, which is exactly the kind of community work that matters most, but we also need to know what we're building here for the next generation.
