Ty's Take
The screwworm alert ought to get everybody's attention around here, because that's not some distant range problem—it's in our backyard and it hits both sides of what keeps this county alive. A rancher loses cattle to parasites while an artist planning a gallery space worries about her horses, and suddenly you realize how thin the line is between the mining heritage we came from and the outdoor life we're trying to build. Meanwhile, the Bayard police dust-up reminds us that even small-town governance gets tangled fast when different jurisdictions bump shoulders over turf. Good news is the pop-up art project shows Silver City's still dreaming bigger, which we need. Bad news is a lot of that dreaming depends on having a functioning, stable place to live and work. Hard to build a community art museum when you're watching what gets fed to your livestock.
