Ty's Take
The boil-water scare that rattled folks here last week turned out to be exactly what we needed, if you can call it that. The system held, the city caught the problem early, and nobody got sick, which means the infrastructure that keeps a town of 6,000 alive actually works when it matters. But that same week, we're staring down a copper mine proposal that would pull water out of these aquifers like there's no tomorrow, and a flood declaration that reminds us the Rio Grande doesn't care much about what we want or what we've built. You can see the collision coming: we've spent decades learning to live with less water, and now someone wants to bet the county's future that there's plenty to spare. There isn't.
