Water's been the argument around here since before there was a town to argue about it, and this week's commission decision on tax rates tells you something: we're still betting on what comes next. The mining story makes that bet clearer. You can't run an operation in this country without water, and whatever gets pulled out of the ground has to come from somewhere, which means the Rio Grande keeps mattering more than the back forty ever will. Meanwhile, the trail folks are out there planning bridges and ultras like the desert's already solved. Maybe it has. Maybe we've just learned to do more with less, the way you learn anything when you grow up here.
