When a threat closes down the schools and puts parents in their cars heading to pick up their kids, everything else stops mattering for a few hours. We don't know yet what happened or who made the call, but the shelter-in-place drill became real yesterday and that's the kind of thing that stays in a town's bones. Meanwhile we've got an arrest in a shooting, a mining museum getting updates over in Bayard, and somehow a Japanese fire truck showed up to brighten the mood, which tracks for Silver City, a place that can hold hard news and quirky hope in the same afternoon. The schools will reopen, the threat will likely prove to be less than feared, and this week will blur into the next like most weeks do. But yesterday somebody had to make a decision to lock things down, and somebody had to go pick up a scared kid early, and that doesn't get forgotten just because the all-clear sounds.
