The Copper Flat Mine hearings keep landing back on the same hard question, and it's the only one that matters out here: what happens to Elephant Butte when you start pulling water upstream for industrial use? County commissioners are right to dig in on this one. We've got retirees depending on lake levels for their property values, ranchers downstream who've fought for every acre-foot, and a whole town that was renamed fifty years ago because somebody had faith this place could draw people and money. You can't get that back once it's gone, and you can't mine copper with promises.
