Water's the only story that matters down here, and right now we're living in the margins of it. The chile harvest is coming in around Arrey, same as it always does, and that's good news for the folks who've built their lives around it, but everybody knows those green rows depend on what flows down the Rio Grande and how much Elephant Butte Lake decides to hold onto any given year. The state parks folks are giving us updates on the lake, which is fine, but updates aren't the same as answers. We've been dancing around this uncertainty for years now, talking about water as if it's something we can manage our way through with the right meetings and the right paperwork. It isn't. It's something we live with or without, and right now we're all just hoping the math works out better next season than it did in the last one.
