Monsoon season's knocking early this year, which ordinarily would be good news—except we're already talking water overconsumption before the dry months even hit. That's the tight spot Sierra County finds itself in again: praying for rain to fill Elephant Butte while knowing full well that every drop spoken for twice over before it ever gets here. Meanwhile, the Little League kids are lining up for districts, which means parents and grandparents will be out at the ballfields all spring doing what they do best—forgetting about the bigger water fights for a few hours and just watching their kids play. That's not a bad thing. But it's also the kind of distraction we can't afford for too long.
