Ty's Take

Every July, Elephant Butte fills with boats and fireworks and people remembering why they moved here in the first place, and there's nothing wrong with that—a town needs its celebrations. But you can't help noticing the city commission spending its energy on circus acts while the real machinery of keeping Truth or Consequences running gets handled almost as an afterthought. Hazard mitigation, airport grants, mosquito control—the unglamorous work that keeps a place functioning—these slide through while somebody's arguing about goals and interim budgets like we've got the luxury of distraction. Out here, bread comes first. Everything else is just what makes waiting for it tolerable.
