Ty's Take
There's something worth noting in how a town hangs together when the economy tilts. Cobre Mining's complaint against former employees sits uncomfortable next to a nonprofit store that's turning other people's castoffs into down payments on roof repairs, and maybe that's exactly the point. Silver City has been through enough cycles, from the boom years when the Chino mine ran full bore to the harder seasons after, that folks here have learned something about salvage and second chances. A flood watch in late October reminds us we're still at the mercy of weather and geography, still dependent on the land more than most places. But that 40-year bicycling race, packed with riders from all over, proves we've managed to build something else worth staying for besides what comes out of the ground.
