Ty's Take
Thompson spent decades writing about kids who played ball on this high desert and telling their stories the way they deserved to be told, which is harder work than most people think. You don't stay in a small-town sports editor's chair for that long unless you believe something true about community, about why it matters that a senior hits a home run or a team learns how to lose together. Western New Mexico University recognizing him says something about what this town values, or anyway what it ought to. The data center talk and the police coverage shuffle will come and go, but Thompson's the kind of person you remember twenty years later, when you're back visiting and someone says his name and you nod because you remember what it meant to have somebody paying attention.
