Ty's Take
The Planning and Zoning board's endorsement of a data center moratorium this week amounts to Silver City saying no thank you to one more bet on somebody else's future. We've been down that road before, watching outside money flow in with promises and flow out once the tax breaks dried up. The federal waiver making headlines over state authority on border construction, meanwhile, tells you something about how little control counties like ours have when Washington decides the stakes are high enough. Then there's Freeport's quarterly operational update, which mostly amounts to Chino Mine keeping the lights on the way it always has. That's real work. That's people who live here and depend on a paycheck. The difference between betting the town on data centers and betting it on what we know, what we've always known, is the difference between hope and history. Around here, we've learned to think hard before we choose.
