Ty's Take

Screwworms in the Mimbres Valley, flood damage over in Deming, and now the Forest Service is fixing to light fires in the Pinos Altos come fall. It's the kind of week that reminds you this country doesn't sit still, and neither can we. That livestock quarantine is serious business for ranchers who've got animals on that land, and flooding always costs somebody money they weren't planning to lose. But the prescribed burns, those are the long game, the kind of work that keeps the whole forest from turning into a tinderbox. Around here we understand that sometimes you have to make a hard choice now to prevent a worse one later. Folks will notice the smoke. Folks will complain. And then, God willing, we'll all sleep a little easier next summer knowing the ridge country is healthier for it.
