Ty's Take

September 16th means something different depending who you ask in Silver City. Some folks are thinking about El Grito de Dolores and what that cry for independence meant, echoing from Mexico City all the way here. Others are out on Boston Hill watching burros come back to familiar ground, or stopping by what used to be a barbershop, trying to remember what it felt like to get a proper haircut and catch up on the week's news in one place. That's the thing about a town like this, caught between mining camps and art studios, between the high desert and the wilderness beyond: we're always celebrating something, always trying to bring back something worth keeping, always caught between what we were and what we're becoming. The candidate forums and road closures that fill the rest of the week's news feel almost ordinary by comparison.
