Ty's Take
Western New Mexico University keeps talking about getting competitive on wages, and now there's a study saying they're on the path to it, which is the kind of thing institutions say when they're not quite there yet. The university is Silver City's largest employer and the reason half our young people don't have to leave town to find work, so when WNMU struggles to attract and keep good faculty and staff, the whole community feels it. Add in the county taking over the conference center operations and you've got two institutions trying to figure out their footing at the same time, which is either a sign of things settling down or things about to shift. The good news is that people still come here, still write about us, still find their way to places like the Gila even when the reasons are complicated and personal. That matters.
