Ty's Take
Labor Day weekend brought the kind of traffic Silver City actually wants to see, with art seekers wandering through the Red Dot Studio Tour instead of the usual folks just passing through on their way to somewhere else. The Art Association's annual open-studio event has become the town's best advertisement for what we've built here, and this year's tour proved the formula still works, drawing visitors who actually spend money at local businesses and leave talking about the place. When you've got a mining heritage and a shrinking tax base, watching artists turn empty storefronts into working studios becomes more than just nostalgia, it becomes economics. The real question is whether we're making it easy enough for those artists to stay, especially when housing costs keep climbing and the state seems to care more about what comes out of the ground than what gets created above it. This weekend showed us what Silver City is becoming, which isn't a bad thing to build on.
