Ty's Take
There's something about fire lookouts that pulls at people who've spent time in country like ours, and it's no accident that both New Mexico books heading to the national festival this month have them at the center. Maybe it's because a fire lookout is the last honest job left, the kind where you sit alone and watch for trouble and know exactly what you're supposed to do when it shows up. That beats most of what passes for work these days. Meanwhile, down at the Mimbres after those recent storms, folks are dealing with the opposite kind of fire danger, the kind that comes wet and fast and doesn't ask permission. The flooding there reminds you that even in a dry country, water still calls the shots.
