Money showed up for Southwest New Mexico this week, a million dollars of it, but nobody's saying much about where it's going or what it'll fix. That's the kind of headline that makes a small county editor's antenna go up, especially when there's real need sitting right here on Main Street. A congressman toured downtown, which is nice visibility, but visibility doesn't pay the bills or rebuild what's broken. The good news is our native plants don't much care what the monsoon does or where the state money lands, they'll grow either way, which tells you something about what lasts around here and what doesn't. In a town built on extraction and surviving on tourism and education, we need to know how a million dollars lands. Transparency isn't optional when it's public money.
