Budget meetings that pit one good thing against another good thing are the hardest kind, and the city council's choice between fixing streets and funding the library and museum says everything about where we are right now. Nobody's arguing these places don't matter. The library and museum are threads that hold Silver City together, especially when the rest of the state barely knows we exist. But potholes turn into sinkholes, and sinkholes turn into real trouble fast. What makes this different from some other year is that there's no easy answer hiding in the fine print, which is exactly when a community finds out what it actually values most.
